Called GRID and due to land in mid-08, it takes a different apporach to
racing than some of the other games on the market. While others
concentrate on allowing players to fine tune the brake balance and
camber of their car, GRID's main objective is to bring drama and
excitement in lumps the size of speedboats. It will be a buffet of damage, smoke and speed.

Players will blast through major US cities in big block V8s like the 2008 Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro. Then its off to Europe for some track racing in Pagani Zondas, Koenigseggs and Astons. Topping it off will be a bout of sideways action in Japan, weather it be in its beightly lit cities or in the outlying mountain roads. This world tour of motorsport will be hosted by a redention of the DiRT game engine, which waswell recieved by the community.

So to sum up : Fun game, racing everywhere and everything, mid-2008 Wink

News has shook the gaming world last night announcing that videogame giants Activision (Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero) and Blizzard (World of Warcraft, Starcraft) are likely to merge into 1 company. This is the result of the French media giant Vivendi which already owns Blizzard wanting to take over Activision. The merged business will be called Activision Blizzard and the current CEO of Activision Bobby Kotick will become CEO of Activion Blizzard. According to Vivendi CEO Jean-Bernard Levy the gaming industry will become the core business for Vivendi, which also owns record company Universal and television and movie studio Canal+.

This merger will create a company generating a revenue of $3.8 billion this year, more than the current market leader Electronic Arts which has a revenue of only $3.2 billion, which can be seen as a major shift of power in the gaming industry. Vivendi has offered $27.50 per Activision share, 24% more than the $22.15 at which it closed last friday, the deal is planned to close somewhere in the first half of 2008. Activision will invest $1 billion into the new business while Blizzard will invest twice that amount.

The first version of the Half-Life 2: Wars modification has been released, this modification uses the Source engine to create a real time strategy version of Half-Life 2. This first release contains 2 maps and basic functions, features like base building will be added in later releases. To play Half-Life 2: Wars an existing installation of Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1 is required.

Half-Life 2: Wars is a Realtime Strategy modification in the hl2
universe. This mod is has most basic features you would expect from an
RTS game, including unit control, objectives, mission structure, rts
navigation and a fog of war. To gain resources, there are points that
can be captured and generate a slow income. Mapping documentation is
also available on the forum.

Base building is not possible yet, but will follow in the next release. Same for fully worked out sides and multiplayer.
The current release requires Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: episode one to play and is more like a preview for later releases.

With Prostreet not far off now, EA Games will allow gamers a taste of what they will be paying for. A hefty 800mb download for just 2 cars and 2 tracks could only mean two things:

  • EA games forgot to compress the game or;
  • The game is gonna be awesome

Stepping in, the game is a far cry from Need For Speeds of old, the easy going driving has been buckled down into a serious no-nonsense racer. Even if you do try to tune up the 'unrealism', you wont find much in the way of arcade physics. Damage is pretty fun to watch. You can actually total your car and fail the race altogether. But if you dont get that far, you can watch your car bend, lose parts and still move!

Update : The two cars you get in the demo are probably amongst the most coveted. The new E92 BMW M3 and the Nissan GTR. The races they are found in are Speedtrap (I know its not called that, but the concept is exactly the same) and Circuit respectively.

November 14th. Mark your calanders, this is going to be fast... Wink
